Indulgences do not forgive sins , past present and future. They are concerned with the temporal punishment which is due forgiven sin.

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth

Some will be saved as though by fire.

Christians from the very start prayed for the dead and all the amjor early Church fathers did so. It is not an invention of the middle ages...although the doctrine of purgatory was defined formally in the middle ages.In the same way the Trinity was not an invention of the fourth cnetury, it was a theological definition of an already believed truth.

The Catholic Church abolished alms indulgence in 1567. However in the Bible alms giving is seen as salvific and meritorious. Look at Cornelius in Acts chapter Ten.

In lukes Gospel Jesus states ,
" give alms and all things wil be clean to you."
